Does Defense Win NBA Championships? Balance Matters
A league-leading offense paired with a defense outside the top ten produced no champions in 16 cases. This analysis compares that pattern with elite defenses, balanced teams and typical champion rankings. The findings refine the defense slogan into a discussion of strength at both ends rather than a universal championship formula.

Three findings
- Since 2000-01, a league-best offense with a defense outside the top 10 has won the title zero times in 16 tries. The 2025-26 Nuggets, 1st on offense and 21st on defense, fit that profile.
- A #1 defense with a top-10 offense won the title 4 times in 13 tries, about 31%. A #1 offense with a top-10 defense won 2 of 10, 20%.
- Nineteen of 26 champions were top 10 at both ends, and the median champion ranked 5th on offense and 4th on defense.
